Uzbek chess grandmaster Sindarov sets up world title match with Gukesh 15.04.2026

Uzbek chess grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov has secured a spot in the World Championship match by winning the Candidates Tournament with one round remaining, following a draw with Anish Giri. The 20-year-old dominated the Cyprus event, going undefeated through 13 games and accumulating 9.5 points, two points ahead of Giri. Sindarov's victory prevents challengers like Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura from mounting a serious bid for the title. He will face the reigning champion, Gukesh Dommaraju of India, in a match for which dates and venues are still to be announced, despite the emergence of younger talent, Magnus Carlsen has stated he has no plans to return to classical championship play.
