Labor lashes Coalition immigration plan as Usman Khawaja calls policy ‘appalling’ 15.04.2026

The Coalition has unveiled a new immigration policy proposed by Angus Taylor that aims to prioritize migrants from liberal democracies, a move Labor criticizes as a bid to appeal to One Nation voters and a fundamental shift in the nation's character. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke challenged the Coalition to provide specific examples of individuals who cannot currently be deported but would be under the new plan, arguing the policy lacks substance and is more about generating discussion. Cricket star Usman Khawaja labeled the policy "appalling," suggesting it discriminates against Muslims and urged for clarity rather than vague terms. The proposed policy seeks to make Australia's values statement enforceable within the Migration Act for visa cancellations and refusals, and would introduce a "safe country list" for faster asylum claim refusals, mirroring UK practices.
