Cases of this diarrhea-causing infection are rising across the US 15.04.2026

Cases of the contagious and increasingly drug-resistant bacterial infection Shigella are rising across the U.S., with recent warnings from health officials highlighting a concerning trend. While Shigella typically causes symptoms like bloody diarrhea, fever, and dehydration, drug-resistant strains pose a significant challenge, affecting an estimated 242,000 individuals annually who do not respond to standard antibiotic treatments. A new federal report indicates that white men are now the most susceptible demographic to drug-resistant Shigella infections, a finding that may alter hospital responses. Experts express concern over the high transmission potential of "excessively drug resistant" (XDR) strains, for which no oral antibiotic is currently approved. Public health advice emphasizes frequent handwashing, safe food and water consumption, and awareness of transmission routes, including sexual contact.
