Atiku signals last presidential run, asserts northern political dominance 12h ago

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a perennial presidential hopeful, has indicated that the 2027 Nigerian general election will likely be his final bid for the presidency, citing his age and the increased significance of the contest. Abubakar, who has pursued the top office for decades and was the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) candidate in 2019 and 2023, shared this sentiment during a live interview on Arise Television on Wednesday. He also expressed willingness to respect the outcome of a credible primary process, even if it means stepping aside for another aspirant like Peter Obi within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he is reportedly positioning himself. Beyond his own candidacy, Abubakar asserted his significant political influence in Northern Nigeria, claiming no current or emerging leader from the region commands a comparable voter base, specifically downplaying Rabiu Kwankwaso's support as largely confined to Kano State.
