Israel and Lebanon agree 10-day ceasefire, Trump says 16.04.2026

US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire, effective Thursday at 17:00 EST, following six weeks of conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in southern Lebanon. The war, which began March 2, was triggered by Hezbollah firing rockets into Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader. The conflict has resulted in over 2,000 Lebanese deaths, displacement of over a million people, and destruction of tens of thousands of homes, while two Israeli civilians and 13 soldiers have been killed. The agreement came after direct talks in Washington, and Trump plans to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun for further negotiations at the White House. While the ceasefire aims to pause hostilities, the crucial issue of Hezbollah's weaponry remains unresolved, with Lebanese authorities advocating for negotiation.
