US President Donald Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, effective April 16th at 17:00 EST, aiming for good-faith negotiations toward a permanent peace agreement. The truce, a gesture of goodwill from Israel, was welcomed by both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, who invited them to the White House. Despite the ceasefire, Israeli troops will remain 10km into southern Lebanon, an area described as a "security zone" where over 1,400 buildings have been destroyed by Israel. Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group not part of the Lebanese government, has signaled willingness to abide by the ceasefire if it includes a comprehensive halt to attacks and no freedom of movement for Israeli forces. The conflict, which began on March 2nd, has displaced over 1.2 million people in Lebanon and resulted in over 2,100 deaths according to Lebanon's health ministry.
