PRIME More corporates turn to solar to cut power costs 8h ago

Kenyan businesses are increasingly adopting solar power to mitigate high electricity costs and reduce reliance on the national grid. Shalimar Fresh, a fresh produce exporter, has installed a 1.7-megawatt (MW) solar plant at its Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) premises, while Homekena, a construction ballast producer, has set up a 426-kilowatt (kW) system in Kiserian, Kajiado County. Both companies report significant savings on their electricity bills, with Shalimar Fresh citing lower prices and improved sustainability for European exports, and Homekena experiencing a 50% reduction. Solar installation firms are observing a rise in demand for power purchase agreements, with Miale Solar Inventions noting substantial installations across various sectors. As of December 2025, Kenya's captive solar capacity reached 326.7 MW, representing 14.74% of the total installed power capacity, and major corporations like Coca-Cola are also planning significant solar installations.
