Interconnect Malta (ICM) has launched a €3.6 million tender to gather crucial metocean data for the nation's inaugural offshore floating wind farm, a significant step in diversifying Malta's renewable energy portfolio. This two-year data collection initiative will take place across two designated sites within Malta’s economic zone, selected for their technological feasibility and environmental considerations, with developers retaining site selection flexibility. The project aims to supply renewable energy equivalent to 25% of Malta's projected 2025 electricity demand by measuring wind, waves, and environmental factors like avian activity using advanced equipment such as LiDAR. This actual site data will reduce uncertainty and enable developers to formulate precise technical and financial proposals, moving beyond current modeling-based estimates and supporting Malta's broader energy strategy and transition to sustainable generation.
