Built in Greenbelt, NASA’s Roman Space Telescope prepares to map the universe 24.04.2026

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, named after the agency's first chief astronomer, has been completed at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt after over a decade of development. This massive telescope, standing over 40 feet tall, is designed with a wide-viewing capability intended to significantly advance understanding of dark energy and dark matter, and to discover tens of thousands of exoplanets. Scientists believe Roman's sweeping surveys, which will collect data at an unprecedented rate, could reveal flaws in current cosmological models and provide a new atlas of the universe. It also features a coronagraph to directly observe exoplanets by blocking starlight. Following final testing, the telescope is slated to ship to Kennedy Space Center for a potential launch as early as September.
