The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has issued a stern warning to Nigerian citizens in South Africa regarding planned anti-foreigner demonstrations. Citing a circular from the Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg, NiDCOM highlighted that similar protests in East London, Cape Town, Durban, and KwaZulu-Natal have already resulted in violence, looting, and injuries. Further demonstrations are anticipated in the Gauteng Province from April 27-29, 2026, with the explicit intent to protest the presence of foreign nationals. Nigerians are advised to exercise extreme caution, avoid confrontations, monitor local media, and business owners are urged to consider closing their establishments on April 27-29 due to the targeting of foreign-owned businesses. The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg remains operational and is collaborating with South African police for protection, while diplomatic engagements are ongoing at the ministerial level.
