A fire at the GRIDCo Ghana Akosombo substation on Saturday, 25th April 2026, has caused significant power outages in parts of the Ashanti and Central Regions. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) reported intermittent or total power cuts affecting numerous communities, including Konongo and its surrounding towns in Ashanti, and a wide array of areas in the Central Region such as West End, Pedu Junction, Cape Coast Technical University, and communities in Moree. Engineers are actively working to restore electricity supply, and investigations into the cause of the fire at the transmission facility are underway by GRIDCo Ghana, with updates expected as restoration progresses.
