Chinese scientists build ‘zero emission’ coal-fired battery 27.04.2026

Scientists at Shenzhen University have developed a novel zero-carbon-emission direct coal fuel cell (ZC-DCFC) designed to address the high carbon footprint of traditional coal-fired power generation. This innovative technology, detailed in the journal Energy Reviews, avoids combustion and thermal engine inefficiencies by directly converting pulverized and pre-treated coal into energy through an electrochemical oxidation process within the fuel cell. The ZC-DCFC system captures the generated carbon dioxide internally, converting it into valuable feedstocks like syngas. The design achieves an energy generation efficiency of up to 40 percent and overcomes previous limitations of short operational lifetimes and low power density by being scalable and offering higher carbon-to-energy conversion efficiency, presenting a disruptive pathway for near-zero-emission coal utilization.
