Update Darunter auch viele Nationalgardisten: 74 Tote bei Festnahme von Drogenboss „El Mencho“ in Mexiko 23.02.2026

At least 74 people, including 25 National Guardsmen, died during the attempted arrest of Mexican drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," in Jalisco on Sunday. El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), was wounded during the operation in Tapalpa and died en route to Mexico City. Following his death, suspected cartel members initiated widespread unrest across several states, setting cars ablaze, blocking roads, and attacking banks, gas stations, and businesses. This violence led some airlines to suspend flights to the region, prompting the German Foreign Office to advise caution to its citizens in Mexico. US President Donald Trump called for increased efforts from Mexico in combating cartels, while security experts anticipate prolonged factional violence and succession struggles within the criminal underworld.
