Hiroshima A-bomb survivor calls for abolition of 'devil's weapons' at U.N. 8h ago

Jiro Hamasumi, the 80-year-old secretary-general of Nihon Hidankyo, Japan's leading atomic bomb survivors group, called for the abolition of nuclear weapons during a speech at the United Nations in New York on Friday. Hamasumi, who was exposed to the Hiroshima atomic bomb while in his mother's womb, described nuclear bombs as "weapons of the devil that cannot coexist with humanity." He invoked a phrase from a landmark 1982 U.N. speech by former Hidankyo official Senji Yamaguchi: "No more war, no more hibakusha." His appeal comes amid ongoing global concerns about nuclear proliferation and disarmament.
