The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (DMPR) announced that from Wednesday, petrol and diesel prices will increase, with petrol 93 and 95 rising by R3.27 per litre and both diesel grades (0.05% and 0.005% sulphur) by R6.19 per litre. Illuminating paraffin wholesale price increases by R4.22 per litre, single maximum national retail price by R5.63 per litre, and LPGas by R5.07 per kg in Gauteng and R5.78 per kg in the Western Cape. Government efforts to cushion consumers include extending the R3 decrease in the general fuel levy for petrol and a R3.93 reduction for diesel. These adjustments are driven by the average Brent Crude oil price rising from $93.67 to $101 USD, due to continued US-Iran tension, closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and damage to crucial infrastructure, which affected crude oil supply and increased demand for middle distillates. The Rand remained constant against the US Dollar, contributing less than one cent per litre to price changes.
