Golden Miles Bhudu, president of the South African Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights, has filed a R7 million lawsuit against the police ministry and the National Prosecuting Authority for wrongful detention. Arrested in September 2008 following accusations of corruption and assisting an escapee, Bhudu spent months in custody before being released on R10,000 bail in February 2009. In July 2024, acting judge Thembi Bokako set aside his conviction and sentence, citing a lack of evidence after the trial record was lost for 15 years. Bhudu alleges his prosecution was a retaliatory act by police officials he previously reported. He claims the ordeal caused severe reputational damage, financial loss, and emotional distress, ultimately hindering his professional aspirations and public service career.
