'Perhaps Europe itself is moving towards dark past', Georgian parliament speaker tells EU's envoy 08.05.2026

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili penned an open letter to EU Ambassador Pawel Herczynski on Europe Day, criticizing current EU policies for fostering division and confrontation, a stark departure from the Union’s founding vision of preventing war. Papuashvili highlighted Georgia's significant sacrifices in the fight against fascism, deeming the separation of Europe Day from Victory Day unacceptable and emphasizing the memory of 300,000 Georgians who died. He accused the EU of interfering in Georgia's internal affairs through resolutions, sanctions, and pressure, and neglecting to condemn an "attempted coup." Papuashvili asserted Georgia's co-authorship of European civilization, advocating for a partnership based on respect for national sovereignty and traditional values, rather than EU dominance or demands for economic confrontation with Russia without security assurances.
