Israeli settlers force Palestinian family to exhume and rebury their father 09.05.2026

In the occupied West Bank, Israeli settlers, allegedly with military backing, forced the Palestinian Asasa family to exhume and rebury their father, 80-year-old Hussein Asasa, who died on Friday near Jenin. The family had initially buried him in the village cemetery after coordinating with Israeli security forces. However, settlers demanded the reburial, claiming the grave was on land designated for an Israeli settlement, which is considered illegal under international law. Faced with threats of a bulldozer, the family complied, with Israeli soldiers reportedly present and pressuring them to relocate the body. The UN Human Rights Office condemned the incident as "appalling and dehumanising," highlighting a surge in settler attacks since October 2023. The Israeli military denied ordering the reburial but stated soldiers were present to prevent further conflict.
