New research from the University of Sydney suggests that Star Trek's theoretical warp drive, intended to overcome the limitations of faster-than-light travel by manipulating spacetime, could actually function as a weapon of mass destruction. The concept involves compressing space in front of a ship and expanding it behind, creating a "warp bubble" that allows the vessel to travel vast distances. However, the study indicates that the vacuum of space is not empty but filled with radiation and particles. These particles would be swept into the warp bubble and focused into high-energy gamma rays and particles at the ship's destination, posing a fatal threat to any life there upon arrival due to extreme blueshifts.
