Union says Pick n Pay restructuring threat puts 22,000 jobs at risk 11.05.2026

The South African Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) is opposing Pick n Pay's proposed restructuring, which could impact approximately 22,000 employees. The union alleges that the retailer is threatening retrenchments or forcing employees to accept significantly reduced working conditions to cut labor costs within the non-management bargaining unit. Saccawu stated that workers received Section 189A notices via the CCMA, initiating a consultation process that presents employees with the choice between retrenchment or accepting changes such as reduced working hours leading to salary cuts, removal of transport for late shifts, elimination of the 13th cheque, and altered Sunday pay. The union accuses Pick n Pay of acting in bad faith and believes workers are unfairly bearing the brunt of financial difficulties while management is protected.
