Maj Gen Jayez Al Moussa, a former chief of staff of the Syrian air force under Bashar Al Assad, has been apprehended by Syria's new authorities. The Interior Ministry stated that counter-terrorism police captured him in a precise operation, marking him as the latest high-ranking figure from the Assad era to be arrested since Assad's overthrow in 2024. Al Moussa faces allegations of responsibility for chemical attacks, including the use of sarin and chlorine, which UN investigators found evidence of during the civil war. His forces were notably active during the Aleppo offensive. He previously served as governor of Hasakah from 2020. The new administration under President Ahmad Al Shara is actively pursuing Assad loyalists, with other former officials, including Atif Najib, Adnan Abboud Halawa, and Amjad Yousef, also facing detention and charges related to the civil war.
