Keeping data centres in check 15.05.2026

Malaysia is forming a federal Data Centre Task Force (DCTF) that will include all state governments to manage the rapid expansion of data centres and ensure national resources like power and water are not overstretched. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo emphasized a whole-of-government approach, with the DCTF focusing on energy sufficiency and alternative energy sources, while state governments will handle water supply and local approvals. Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari highlighted the state's efforts to boost water reserves and develop a white paper on AI, stressing the need for collaborative planning between federal and state authorities. Concerns about energy and water consumption, as well as the need for talent development for AI-driven job markets, are being addressed through ongoing discussions and framework development.
