Msunduzi ratepayers want accountability in urban renewal efforts 16.05.2026

The Msunduzi Municipality recently hosted the Pietermaritzburg Urban Development Indaba, a collaborative effort involving government, business, investors, and civil society to address urban decay and foster economic revival. Key themes included reversing decay, improving service delivery, strengthening infrastructure, enhancing safety, and unlocking investment. Discussions focused on practical solutions like a one-stop shop for investment, streamlining the rates clearance system, and centralizing law enforcement. However, ratepayers expressed significant concerns about political interference, corruption, nepotism, cadre deployment, and the lack of accountability and visible implementation of past promises, urging a focus on tangible outcomes and stakeholder collaboration for effective urban renewal.
