Taiwan insists it is independent after Trump warning 16.05.2026

Taiwan has reaffirmed its status as a sovereign and independent nation following remarks from US President Donald Trump, who cautioned against a formal declaration of independence from China. Trump indicated he had made "no commitment either way" regarding the self-governing island, which China considers its territory. This statement followed a summit in Beijing where Trump discussed Taiwan extensively with Chinese President Xi Jinping, noting Xi's strong feelings about the island and his opposition to independence movements. The US is legally obligated to provide Taiwan with means of self-defense, and Trump confirmed he would soon decide on an $11 billion arms package. Taiwan's presidential spokesperson stated that independence is "self-evident" but emphasized commitment to maintaining the status quo, a position supported by most Taiwanese.
