Tanzania eyes economic boost after rare earth discovery in Njombe 20.05.2026

Tanzania is on the cusp of a significant economic transformation following the discovery of substantial rare earth elements (REEs), primarily Neodymium and Praseodymium, in Mkiu Village, Ludewa District, Njombe Region. These minerals are crucial for modern technologies like electric vehicles and wind turbines, positioning Tanzania as a potential key player in the strategic minerals market. The discovery, made during ongoing exploration by the government and Hongji Mining Co. Ltd, promises substantial benefits through trade and investment. Hongji Mining plans to utilize in-situ leaching technology, aiming for minimal environmental impact and direct community benefits, including employment and economic growth. This development, alongside the Ngualla Rare Earth Project, could significantly boost Tanzania's government revenue and strengthen its role in the global clean energy economy.
