150 pastoralist women in Manyara receive customary land titles 24.05.2026

On May 23, 2026, 150 women from pastoralist communities in Simanjiro and Kiteto districts, Manyara Region, were awarded customary land ownership certificates in Arusha. This initiative, supported by the Maasai Women Development Organisation (MWEDO) and government collaboration, aims to combat historical discrimination and cultural barriers that have prevented women from owning land, thereby strengthening their economic independence. Beneficiaries like Helena Isaya and Suzan Lembris expressed hope for freedom and the ability to pursue development activities without fear of losing their property. While Tanzanian law guarantees equal land rights, entrenched cultural practices have marginalized women; thus, civic education and continued support from development partners are crucial for their empowerment.
