China merges lunar programmes as race to moon with US heats up after latest SpaceX launch 24.05.2026

China has announced the integration of its crewed and uncrewed lunar programs following SpaceX's successful Starship launch, aiming to consolidate decades of experience from human spaceflight and the Chang'e missions. Zhang Jingbo, a spokesman for the China Manned Space Agency, stated this merger will "fully leverage the technical foundations and practical experience" accumulated by both initiatives. Senior engineer Zhou Yaqiang confirmed the integration process is "progressing smoothly." While acknowledging the intensified space race with the US, Chinese officials maintain a commitment to the peaceful exploration of space, emphasizing that their crewed lunar program operates on schedule and is not influenced by external competition. They anticipate a future Chinese lunar landing will be a significant achievement for all humankind.
