Man accused of hurling rock at rare seal was assaulted, lawyer says 8h ago

Igor Lytvynchuk, a 38-year-old tourist from Covington, Washington, faces federal charges for allegedly throwing a coconut-sized rock at an endangered Hawaiian monk seal, identified as R404, on a Maui beach earlier this month. Prosecutors state a witness captured video of the incident, which narrowly missed the seal's head. Lytvynchuk is accused of harassing and attempting to harass a protected animal, violating the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. His defense attorney, Myles Breiner, claims Lytvynchuk mistook the seal for an aggressive sea lion and was trying to protect sea turtles, stating his client has since been assaulted, threatened, and doxed. If convicted, Lytvynchuk faces up to one year in prison and significant fines for each charge.
