Electric power generation is the second-heaviest polluting sector in the U.S., responsible for 25% of greenhouse gas emissions in 2022, with coal plants being major contributors. Despite a more than 50% decrease in coal usage since its 2007 peak, coal still accounted for about 20% of American electricity production in 2022, generating 55% of the electric power sector’s carbon emissions. Using U.S. Energy Information Administration data, Climate Crisis 247 identified counties fueling this "coal addiction," with a focus on those producing at least 7 million short tons in 2023. Campbell County, Wyoming, led this list, producing 211.2 million short tons, representing 36.5% of the nation's total coal production for that year.
