9 years after the Kamuina Nsapu conflict, victims are still demanding justice 07.07.2026

Nearly nine years after the Kamuina Nsapu conflict that tore through the Kasai region between 2016 and 2017, victims are still demanding justice and reparations. This conflict, pitting security forces against militias, caused approximately 5,000 deaths according to the UN, as well as multiple human rights violations. On July 3 and 4 in Tshikapa, the National Association of Victims of Congo (ANVC), with the support of FONAREV, organized commemoration days under the theme "Memory, Truth, Justice, and Reconciliation." Despite recent convictions by the Military Court in October 2024, survivors denounce the lack of effective reparations and the impunity of certain perpetrators. Civil society organizations insist that lasting peace requires official recognition of the damages suffered and a rigorous identification of those responsible to close this tragic chapter.
