Drone crash in Galati/MApN: The entire payload of the Russian-provenance Geran-2 drone exploded on impact 29.05.2026

Teams from Romania's National Defence Ministry, Interior Ministry, and Intelligence Service are investigating a drone crash in Galati where a Russian-provenance Geran-2 drone impacted an apartment block. Initial reports indicate the drone's entire payload exploded upon impact, injuring two individuals who were hospitalized. The National Defence Ministry condemned the incident as a challenge to regional security and a disregard for international law, potentially endangering NATO's collective security. Romanian officials, including the interim National Defence Minister and the Foreign Affairs Minister, have engaged with NATO and summoned the Russian ambassador, respectively. President Nicusor Dan convened the Supreme Council of National Defence to address the implications of this significant incident, which has been described as unprecedented and a violation of Romanian airspace, prompting condemnations from various government officials and NATO. Approximately 70 residents were evacuated from the affected building.
