Millions of breast cancer patients could avoid chemotherapy with new genome test 29.05.2026

A groundbreaking genomic test, Prosigna, has demonstrated that millions of breast cancer patients, specifically those over 40 with hormone-sensitive breast cancer and a low risk of recurrence, can safely avoid chemotherapy. The Optima trial, conducted by University College London (UCL), followed over 4,400 participants, comparing outcomes for those who received chemotherapy alongside hormone therapy versus those treated with hormone therapy alone. Five years post-treatment, the survival and recurrence-free rates were nearly identical, with 94.8% alive and cancer-free in the chemotherapy group and 93.6% in the hormone therapy-only group. This evidence suggests a significant reduction in the use of chemotherapy is possible, mitigating its severe side effects while ensuring comparable positive health outcomes.
