Our View: Political privilege has no place in a modern democracy 31.05.2026

In Cyprus, elected deputies and ministers benefit from significant political privileges, including substantial, largely untaxed allowances and generous retirement packages that far exceed those available to ordinary citizens. The gross annual salary for a deputy is €56,300, rising to €99,600 with allowances, nearly half of which are tax-free and contribute to their pension calculations. A deputy serving five years is entitled to a €90,000 retirement bonus and a €1,600 monthly pension, while those serving more terms receive €250,000 and €4,500 respectively. These perks, including early retirement at 60 and tax-free bonuses, are a stark contrast to the provisions for private sector workers. This institutionalized inequality, protected by lawmakers, persists despite a law passed last year to end some special privileges, which will only affect those elected after 2025.
