Dead whale towed ashore in Denmark ahead of autopsy 31.05.2026

The carcass of a humpback whale, affectionately nicknamed "Timmy" and "Hope," which had been the subject of a prolonged and ultimately unsuccessful rescue effort in Germany, has been towed ashore on the Danish island of Anholt. The whale, estimated to be 12-15 meters long, will undergo a post-mortem examination on Thursday by Denmark's environment agency, with concerns about potential decomposition and explosion due to gas build-up. The whale had become stranded in the Baltic Sea in March, and a final rescue attempt in May, after it was moved to the North Sea, failed as the animal was already gravely weakened. Officials are expediting the disposal of the carcass, which has swollen and is now situated on a popular beach, after previous attempts to move it were thwarted by adverse weather.
