Wits named Africa’s top university in global rankings 02.06.2026

Wits University has been recognized as the top university in Africa and ranked 200th globally out of 21,291 institutions in the 2026 Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR). This places the Johannesburg-based institution within the top 1% of universities worldwide. Vice-chancellor Prof Zeblon Vilakazi attributed this achievement to the university's dedication to academic excellence, research, and innovation, noting its strong performance in faculty excellence (ranking 87th globally) and graduate employability (ranking 97th globally). The CWUR ranking system is considered objective, utilizing 81-million data points and focusing on measurable data in education, research, faculty, and graduate employability, unlike survey-reliant rankings. This recognition underscores Wits' global competitiveness and its role in advancing knowledge and development on the continent.
