Even One Drink a Day Could Raise Your Cancer Risk, Study Warns 02.06.2026

A comprehensive analysis of existing research by scientists at the University of Washington has revealed that even light alcohol consumption, defined as less than one drink per day, is linked to an increased risk of several types of cancer. The study, which synthesized data from 843 cohort and case-control studies examining 20 different health outcomes, found convincing evidence of a higher chance of developing breast, colorectal, liver, prostate, esophageal, and pharyngeal cancers with any level of regular alcohol intake. While heavy drinking posed the clearest and most widespread dangers across all evaluated health conditions, the research emphasizes that there appears to be no safe threshold for alcohol consumption when it comes to cancer risk, with the evidence being consistent and unambiguous that risk rises with any intake.
