Oyo School Abduction Is An ‘Assault On Our Collective Humanity’ — Senate 02.06.2026

The Nigerian Senate has strongly condemned the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio labeling it a "national tragedy" and an "assault on our collective humanity." Speaking upon the resumption of plenary, Akpabio lamented the nation's ongoing struggle to ensure the safety of its citizens, particularly children and educators, warning that persistent insecurity jeopardizes Nigeria's future and educational infrastructure. He paid tribute to Michael Oyedokun, who died in captivity, and Adesiyan Adegboye, who was killed during the May 15 attack in Oriire Local Government Area, which resulted in the abduction of 39 pupils and 7 teachers. The Senate will convene a summit to address worsening security challenges, following widespread outrage and protests triggered by the incident.
