Uber to put 500 data collection vehicles on the road this year 13h ago

Uber is launching a fleet of 500 sensor-equipped Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles globally this year to collect real-world driving data for its autonomous vehicle (AV) partners, including Waymo and WeRide. This initiative marks the first self-assembled vehicle by Uber since selling its AV division in 2020 and is a key part of its new AV Labs division, which aims to create the world's most geographically diverse training data for self-driving software. These modified EVs, fitted with numerous cameras, lidar, and radar sensors, will gather "2 million miles per month of high-fidelity data," with 50 vehicles expected to be operational by summer. The collected data, processed through Nvidia's computer, will provide AV partners with a comprehensive dataset to train their autonomous driving systems, building on Uber's existing data collection efforts.
