Florida teen fights for his life after contracting flesh-eating bacteria while swimming with siblings 15.06.2026

Joziah Thompson, a 17-year-old autistic teenager from Florida, is fighting for his life at Studer Family Children's Hospital in Pensacola after contracting Vibrio vulnificus. The "flesh-eating" bacteria entered his system through a scratch while he was swimming at a park in Niceville, Florida. Two days later, his leg became severely inflamed, leading to complications including rapid heart rate and blood pressure struggles. Doctors are currently attempting to save his leg to avoid amputation. His mother, Tirzah Thompson, has launched a GoFundMe campaign, which has raised nearly $12,000, to cover medical and travel expenses. Following this incident, Tirzah is advocating for a public notification system to monitor bacteria levels in local waters to prevent other children from suffering similar life-threatening infections.
