Ontario families struggling as community and social service workers strike enters fourth week 16.06.2026

Approximately 4,000 community and social service workers, represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), have been on strike since May 25. Employed by 22 different organizations, these workers are demanding increased provincial funding and retroactive wages that were previously suppressed by Bill 124, a wage-cap law later deemed unconstitutional. The strike has entered its fourth week, causing severe disruptions for vulnerable populations. Group homes, such as those operated by the Salvation Army, and specialized centers like Aptus have closed, leaving adults with disabilities and children with autism without essential routines and emotional support. Families report significant mental health declines, including depression and anxiety, among their loved ones. While the Salvation Army claims contingency plans are in place for essential supports, families are pleading for a swift resolution to prevent further regression.
