Domestic helpers in Hong Kong are facing widespread restrictions on air conditioner usage, with a union reporting that approximately 80% of its members are prohibited from using them while working alone at home. This issue gained prominence during a recent heatwave, where temperatures reached up to 35 degrees Celsius and the Hong Kong Observatory issued "very hot weather" warnings. One incident involved an employer scolding their helper for turning on the air conditioning an hour earlier than permitted, sparking online criticism. The Observatory advised using fans and keeping windows open for ventilation in the absence of air conditioning. This prolonged hot weather, including six consecutive "hot nights" in May, highlights the need for employers to reconsider these restrictions.
