A recent study published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases reveals a dramatic global surge in the drug-resistant ringworm fungus Trichophyton indotineae. Researchers analyzed data from the Mass Spectrometry Identification (MSI) project, which allows diagnostic labs in 54 countries to submit fungal samples for identification. Between 2022 and 2025, T. indotineae was identified in 29 countries, with the largest share of reports coming from Europe. The number of identifications increased three-fold over this period, and the percentage of T. indotineae spectra within the Trichophyton genus rose from 1.2% to 3.6%.
