A name, a document, a future: Cameroon’s fight to register every child 05.07.2026

Cameroon is intensifying efforts to combat a significant child protection gap caused by the lack of legal identity for thousands of children. Currently, approximately 1.5 million primary school pupils, or 30 percent of the student population, are enrolled without birth certificates. This absence of documentation prevents children from attending secondary school, sitting for public examinations, or obtaining national identity cards. To address this, UNICEF and the Cameroonian government launched the “My Name” campaign, which has already successfully registered over 17,000 children across various municipalities. While some regions like Garoua 2 have implemented digital systems to expedite issuance, challenges persist, including complex court procedures for late registrations and harmful social norms in rural areas. Local authorities are increasingly collaborating with traditional leaders to improve registration rates and protect vulnerable children from exploitation and recruitment.
