A Source of Mysterious Repeating Radio Signals From Space Has Been Identified 22.06.2026

Researchers led by the University of Sydney have identified the source of a long-period radio transient (LPT) known as ASKAP J174508.9-505149. Using the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and follow-up spectroscopic observations, the team confirmed that the repeating radio pulses originate from a binary system in which a white dwarf actively pulls material from a red dwarf companion. The orbital period of the pair is approximately 1.368 hours, closely matching the 1.345-hour interval of the radio bursts. This is the first time the accretion process itself has been directly observed in an LPT, providing the strongest evidence yet that white dwarf binaries can produce these signals.
