Aargau: Death Following Police Intervention – Investigations Underway 07.07.2026

A tragic incident in the Muri district of the Canton of Aargau is currently occupying the judiciary after a man died on December 17, 2024, during a police operation. Emergency services had been dispatched to an apartment due to noise complaints and encountered a man in a state of psychological crisis. After being restrained with handcuffs, leg cuffs, and a spit guard, the man lost consciousness and died. According to an expert report from the forensic medicine department of the Aarau Cantonal Hospital, the cause of death was positional asphyxia. The Zofingen-Kulm Public Prosecutor's Office is now investigating several police officers for negligent homicide. While a second expert opinion is planned to clarify the police measures taken, a relative of the deceased is contesting the necessity of those actions. She has accused the prosecutor of bias, but the High Court rejected her motion for recusal, as it was submitted too late.
