Abuse of Owner Data: Authorities Call for Stricter Rules for Vehicle Owner Inquiries 07.07.2026

In Switzerland, the abuse of vehicle owner inquiries is causing growing concern, as men use license plates to determine women's home addresses in order to visit them at home. The Gender Equality Office and various specialized agencies are criticizing current practices, where names and addresses can often be retrieved online without obstacles. Although an opt-out regulation exists, allowing vehicle owners to block their data free of charge, many affected individuals are unaware of this option. While the Federal Roads Office emphasizes that harassment does not align with the purpose of the information service, politicians such as Nina Fehr Düsel reject legislative changes, arguing that identifying those responsible for accidents remains important. However, experts are calling for stricter rules, such as identity verification for inquiries or better information regarding blocking options, to effectively minimize the risk of stalking and harassment.
