A 21-year-old emu named Adam tragically died at the Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Missouri, after sustaining fatal head injuries from softball-sized hail during a historic storm. The severe weather, which hit on Tuesday, caused significant damage across the city, making it the worst hailstorm in Springfield's history with winds reaching up to 70 miles per hour. Zoo officials attribute Adam's death to the emu's instinct to lie down for cover during storms, which unfortunately exposed its head to the large hailstones. While another animal, Oscar the rhea, was injured but is recovering, all other zoo animals are safe, and the facility has since reopened after extensive cleanup efforts.
