ADB approves USD 230 million loan to modernise water supply and sanitation in Chennai 03.07.2026

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $230 million loan to modernize and expand Chennai's water supply and sanitation infrastructure, benefiting 4.5 million residents in the Greater Chennai area. Despite being India's fourth-largest city and a major industrial hub, Chennai's water supply infrastructure has not kept pace with growth, according to an ADB statement. The investment builds on earlier projects to expand access to safe and equitable water and waste management services, aligning with government initiatives like the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 and the Urban Challenge Fund.
