Airbus-Rüstungschef warnt"Jeder Satellit der Bundeswehr hat einen russischen Begleiter" 18.02.2026

Michael Schöllhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space, has issued a stark warning regarding the security of German military satellites, stating that "every Bundeswehr satellite now has a Russian companion orbiting it, inspecting and observing it." He highlighted the vulnerability of critical space infrastructure, essential for modern economies, to cyberattacks and disruptions, noting that Russia and China possess the capability to disable satellites through various means beyond direct destruction, such as blinding, lens obscuring, electronic jamming, or orbital manipulation. Schöllhorn criticized Europe's past naivety in space security and emphasized the need for Germany to invest €35 billion in space technology, including spy satellites and "guardian satellites" to monitor other spacecraft, to counter threats and reduce reliance on the United States, especially given the dominance of SpaceX. He advocates for European cooperation among Airbus, Thales, and Leonardo to strengthen the European space industry against global competition.
