Airspace over Abastumani closed: observatory needs or Ivanishvili’s whim? 16.04.2026

Effective April 16, 2026, Georgia will restrict airspace over Abastumani, a move officially justified by the need to support astronomical observations at its astrophysical observatory. This significant alteration will reroute international flight paths between Europe and Asia, impacting major airlines like Lufthansa and Emirates, and potentially increasing operational costs due to longer routes and diminished maneuvering space in the challenging Caucasus terrain. However, an investigation by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty suggests the decision may also serve personal interests of Bidzina Ivanishvili, Georgia's informal leader, who has owned a residence in Abastumani since 2020, coinciding with increased land acquisition by his associates and substantial state investment in the region, raising questions about the true motivation behind the nearly 52-kilometer diameter restricted zone.
